There are few things like going to the cinema, grabbing your popcorn and settling in for a good movie. Unless, of course, you can do it under the cover of the night sky. And with outdoor cinema growing and growing in popularity, there are no shortage of options around the Shoreditch area to do just that.
Because Shoreditch is one of the coolest parts of London, you can catch a range of movies outdoors in July. Most are within easy reaching distance of M by Montcalm Shoreditch, so you don’t have to travel far for a great, unique experience.
Floating Film Festival
Taking place from 16th to the 29th of July, the Floating Film Festival is just what it says – movies shown on a floating platform. Held at St Katharine Docks, it’s just a short Tube ride from your room at the M by Montcalm Shoreditch to an amazing outdoor cinema experience.
Seeing a movie outdoors is always special, but it’s even better when you’re gently floating on a pontoon in the middle of a dock, which lends a very unique feel to the whole experience.
Saturday the 28th will be a showing of the classic ‘Back to the Future’ at 2pm, with ‘The Breakfast Club’ following at 7pm. The double bill on the 29th is a great double-bill of ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Dirty Dancing’, so you can get your fill of 80’s classics at the Floating Film Festival. And if you can’t handle two movies back-to-back, you can always duck out and seek some pampering at Montcalm Shoreditch Spa.
Roof East Rooftop Film Club
The Rooftop Film Club puts on showings all over London in unique locales, and the Roof East location is one of the best. You get to watch classic and contemporary movies with an overview of the London skyline – and what could be better than that?
Only a short Tube journey from M by Montcalm Shoreditch, Roof East is an awesome venue and the high-up location makes you feel cloistered and cosy as you watch your film of choice.
If you like a bit of classic, inspirational 80’s fare, check out ‘Footloose’ on the 26th of July. Or, if you want something a little more modern, the brilliant ‘I, Tonya’ is showing on the 31st. Whatever you choose, you can be sure of a great, unforgettable filmgoing experience.
Queen of Hoxton
If you’re looking for an open-air cinema venue that’s just a ten-minute walk from your room at M by Montcalm Shoreditch, then Queen of Hoxton is it.
It’s another rooftop venue, and one that’s just big enough it feels like an experience, but the audience is small enough for showings to still feel like an intimate event.
Notable movies showing in July include ‘Cocktail’ on the 30th of July, which is always a great, fun flick, drenched in eighties style. Alternatively, if you want to give the kids a sample of outdoor cinema ‘The Greatest Showman’ is showing on the 31st.
It’s a great night out and an experience you won’t soon forget.
