Comedy in Shoreditch: What’s On & Where to See It

comedy in Shoreditch

The whole borough of Shoreditch and its surrounding areas is home to an array of comedy venues, and that’s not a surprise when you consider the artistic and irreverent outlook of the place.

These venues are a great place to catch emerging and established talent because many performers see the East End as the place to test new material and develop their comedy chops. In sum, this means a raft of great comedy that you can find by travelling just a short distance from the M by Montcalm Hotel.

Diane Spencer at The Top Secret Comedy Club

So-named because of its inconspicuous appearance – you would probably mistake it for just another commercial building if you didn’t know it was there – The Top Secret Comedy Club is a great place to see new and established comics do their thing.

And on the 26th of September, you can do just that and take in the often cheeky and dark humour of Diane Spencer. Spencer has been building her rep for a good while now, and the fruits of her labour are a coveted Chortle Award for Best Newcomer.

You can expect Spencer to touch on a range of issues, from the everyday to the topical, bringing a razor-sharp eye to bear on the many absurdities of modern life. And, if you want to make an evening of it, you can always grab something to eat at M by Montcalm restaurant before heading out to the show.

Triple Bill at 99 Comedy Club

99 Comedy Club has a great rep, mainly thanks to the sheer number of performers it sees on a weekly basis. This 26th of September show sees a trio of comedians taking to the stage, all of whom you may have seen on the TV at some point.

Ivo Graham – as seen on Mock the Week, Darren Harriot – Live at the Apollo, and Chris McCausland – BBC4, Comedy Central and Live at the Apollo, are all bringing their talents to the 99 Comedy Club, so that’s three well-known and hilarious comedians all for the price of one.

If you find your sides a little sore the day after, you can always pay a visit to the Versace Spa London for a bit of pampering and rejuvenation.

Angel Comedy RAW

One of the best things about to a comedy club blind is that you never what you’re going to get. And that’s precisely what Angel Comedy Raw is all about.

The show brings together established stars, mid-level acts and complete newcomers and it’s up to you how kindly, or otherwise, you treat the acts on stage. The night is designed as a showcase for new material, letting comedians explore new avenues in a friendly – mostly – atmosphere. And, even better, it’s only a short hop from your M by Montcalm Hotel.

It’s a great night out and a chance to catch some acts before they really take off.
