St Patrick’s Day is always a riot and no city (bar perhaps Dublin) in the world marks it like London – so if you are looking for a truly unique way to celebrate March 17th, head to the capital city.
So what’s it all about? St Patrick is one of the patron saints of Ireland, and while it is traditionally a national holiday in Ireland, it is actually marked all over the world by those who aren’t even Irish. On the day itself, there will be a free festival in Trafalgar Square that boasts comedy shows, film showings, an Irish food market, music, dancing, ceilidhs and children’s activities. While the kids get their faces painted, mum and dad can drink a pint of Guinness or warm up with some Irish stew. This is one event you won’t want to miss.
Around London, there will also be parties hosted in various bars and pubs. Whether it is the Irish pubs, which should be your first port of call, or general bars, you can expect traditional drinks served and green decorations everywhere.
If you have booked into a London hotel and are heading early to the city, you simply have to see the St Patrick’s Day Parade, set to take the capital by storm on Sunday March 15th. This annual event is always a visual treat, with stunning floats, marching bands from across the UK, Irish dancing schools, sports clubs and pageant queens all getting involved. The parade will go down Piccadilly on a 1.5-mile route, passing some of the biggest landmarks in London, such as Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and The Ritz, before moving onto Whitehall. What more could you really ask for?
Happy St Patrick’s Day!
