The best cafes in London to get work done

These days it’s fairly customary for people to turn a work or business trip into a nice leisurely holiday, particularly if you’re visiting a big, exciting city like London.

In fact, the Big Smoke can be one of the best places for you to work and enjoy yourself at the same time because there are lots of cafes and such that are there specifically for people to be able to get work done and feel inspired.

You’ll notice when you’re walking around that there are many people sitting by themselves, drinking a coffee and tapping away on laptops or with their heads in documents and folders looking important. Not everyone is working on a screenplay or a novel, in fact a number of them are probably ‘working from home’ to get out of the office environment for a bit or even to have a meeting with a client.

There are so many places to choose from that are great for you to get some work done when you’re in London, so we thought we’d get a list together of some of our top picks, so you know where to start your search.

Peyton & Byrne at the British Library

This is a great place to feel inspired and get lots of productive work done for many, as this is where you’ll be surrounded by the original Beowulf manuscript and Shakespeare’s first folio among many other great works.

If you’re looking for ultimate peace and quiet, we recommend that you get yourself to the reading rooms because you aren’t going to be disturbed there. However, if you want something to eat or drink, this isn’t the place for you because you can’t bring in anything – not even a bottle of water.

Not to worry though, as there’s a lovely restaurant on the first floor that serves everything from salads to afternoon tea. It’s also great for people watching and listening to all the different intelligent conversation all around you.

Perfect for something light to eat, you’ll want something more filling for later on in the day, so we recommend that you try one of the many excellent restaurants in Shoreditch. From burgers to Thai and modern British cuisine to street food, the area has it all. Better yet, Shoreditch High Street is just 24 minutes from the British Library; take the Northern line from King’s Cross St. Pancras and you’ll be there in no time.

M by Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City Hotel

If you’re looking for somewhere to work that’s actually in Shoreditch then you can’t go wrong with M by Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City Hotel.

The lobby is roomy and there are lots of small tables and spots where you can hide yourself away in peace or have a meeting with someone. We have a great bar and restaurant too, if you’d like to have a drink or something to eat while you’re working.

At the hotel, we have lots of equipment should you need it and if you are going to be pulling together a large corporate event, then any of our staff will be happy to help you and tell you about the options that are available.

There are two Timberyard locations, in Seven Dials and Covent Garden, which are both nice and central should you be spending your day smack bang in the middle of the city.

You’ll notice that almost everyone in here is will be working away – it was practically built for freelancers and those who prefer cafes to the usual office environment. As such, there are plenty of power sockets available and you might even be able to find cables to charge your laptop or tablet if you’ve forgotten yours.

When it comes to the decor, you can expect comfortable armchairs and tables made from vintage suitcases, so it’s quirky as well as functional.

In terms of food and drinks, Timberyard champions all manner of independent producers, such as Waterloo Teas, quiches and tarts from The Artisan Bakery and breads from Seven Seeded – all of it delicious.

Bean & Hop

From the name, you might be able to intimate that Bean & Hop is a place to find high-quality coffee and beers and you would certainly be right, as this place serves both with a smile.

Head East to Earlsfield to find this little nugget that boasts excellent espresso, lots of power outlets and long benches, so you can look like you’re working with other people even though you aren’t!

After you’ve finished work for the day, try one of the 70 different types of beer and pair it with a pizza – you won’t regret it.
