Travelling with technology: what to take and what to leave

As a frequent traveller we’re sure you know that there are lots of things you need to bring with you, whether you go away for two nights or a full week.

You need to pack, as you would for a normal trip but you’ll need different outfits, including smart clothes, potentially suits, different shoes for a variety of occasions and of course, you’ll need to bring technology so you are able to work from anywhere at any time.

The reality for many people who travel for work is that they spend most of their time on the road than in a traditional office space, so they need to be able to create an office environment wherever they are. This means that you might have to bring a lot of technological equipment with you; at the very least, you’ll need a laptop and your smartphone but if you’re making a presentation you might need multiple computers, tablets and cables to run things from your screen to the equipment you use in a different office or conference room.

Travelling can get very stressful quickly, particularly if you’re going away for business around the holidays, so we have some tips and hints for you to follow so you can lighten your load.

Be realistic and stringent

Although you want to make sure that you’re adequately prepared and have everything you need, you don’t have to bring everything that you own.

By this we mean that you don’t need several back-up charging units for every device you have – if you’re going to be live tweeting from an event or something then a portable phone charger is a great idea but you only need to bring one. Instead of bringing a separate charger for your tablet as well, you should make sure that you buy one that will suit all your mobile devices.

Again, you should always make sure that you have a charger for your laptop/s but it’s best to ensure that you can use the same cable for each computer.

By doing this, you can make sure that you don’t over-pack your suitcase because even though most devices are lightweight, having a whole range of different ones with their various chargers is really going to add kilos to your case.

To avoid this, lay out everything that you need before you go on your trip and then prioritise which are things that you really need and those that are really just nice to have or being taken just in case. If you’re debating about a piece of tech or some charging equipment then leave it out.

Pick the right suitcase or bag

Although you may not realise it, the right bag or suitcase can be one of the most important travelling decisions that you make.

You need it to be big enough to fit everything that you should bring with you but it also has to be easy to carry and it can’t be hard for you to store either if you’re travelling on planes or trains.

Of course, you’re the only person who knows what is the most comfortable bag for you to carry. If you have back, shoulder or neck problems, it would be best for you to have a bag on wheels. If you don’t suffer with these issues then you should be fine to carry a messenger style suitcase.

Whatever the case, you need to make sure that there are lots of compartments for the different gadgets and cables you have with you. This is to ensure that they’re kept safe and won’t fall out or break during your trip.

Don’t forget that the place that you’re staying in will have lots of equipment too, particularly places like M by Montcalm Shoreditch London Tech City Hotel.
